A 32 hour work week, double digit pay and cost of living increases are on what united auto workers president Shawn Fain calls a long list of demands he will present to car companies this week. He says the companies can afford to pay more because they are making big profits.
“So what have the big three done with these staggering profits? Instead of rewarding the workers who spend long hours wrecking their bodies on the line top make these profits possible, the big three have funneled billions into stock buyback schemes that artificially inflate the value of company shares and further enrich company executives and the top one percent. That’s billions of dollars that have been robbed from these workers who have made these profits possible”
The union and the big three automakers are negotiating a new contract. The current agreement expires next month.
“Our message going into bargaining is clear. Record profits mean record contracts”
