The Grand Rapids Public School Board of Education voted unanimously to approve language for a $305 million no-tax-increase bond proposal, Monday. The measure will appear on the ballot this fall.

School officials say the bond is not a new tax rate or an increase. Instead the no-tax-increase bond is currently being paid by property owners in Grand Rapids.

School board members also approved of the “Reimagine GRPS with US!"Plan framework that proposes how the bond would be spent to meet their goals.

According to GRPS, Bond dollars would go toward making improvements to schools including security enhancements, HVAC upgrades, food service updates, and investments in auditoriums and athletic facilities.

“This is a critical step toward ensuring Grand Rapids Public Schools are ready to prepare children for success in today’s high-tech world. This work not only meets immediate needs for improvements, but also prepares our district to serve our scholars for generations to come,” GRPS Superintendent Leadriane Roby, Ph.D. said in a statement.

“Today’s decision is all about tomorrow’s success. I couldn’t be more excited to serve with a school board and for a community that are focused on the future.”

The election is Nov. 7.
