After months of speculation, the candidate field for Lansing’s open congressional seat is shaping up.

Former Democratic State Senator Curtis Hertel Junior started his week off with a campaign announcement in a crowded union hall in south Lansing.

The race is still early and could see more contenders. But Hertel’s old colleague, former Republican State Senator Tom Barrett, is looking like his top rival.

Hertel says his track record gives him an edge.

“In the Legislature, I worked with a lot of Republicans in order to do big things like bring jobs here to Lansing in the Lansing battery plant. Unfortunately, Tom was not part of most of those conversations.”

Barrett says he has experience representing competitive districts and winning voters over.
