Conversion therapy ban bills head to governor

Critics of the bills question whether they define conversion therapy too broadly

Bills to ban Michigan licensed health care workers from engaging in conversion therapy with children are heading to the governor.

Conversion therapy aims to change a person's sexuality or gender identity.

Democratic Senator Jeremy Moss says it only ends up harming children rather than helping them.

“The person goes through the journey alone. There is no therapist in the world that can direct you toward the end result. But certainly it is painful enough and we shouldn’t add to that pain.”

Critics of the bills question whether they define conversion therapy too broadly.

Supporters say they’re narrowly tailored to avoid banning other treatments like gender affirming care.
