Move comes after commissioners critical of county’s attendance at Grand Haven Pride Festival

The Ottawa County Board of Commissioners are moving forward with a new resolution “expressing support for protecting childhood innocence.”

Introduced by Board Chair and Ottawa Impact founder Joe Moss, the resolution language says that “no county staff or resources shall be allocated to activities, programs, events, content, or institutions which support, normalize, or encourage the sexualization of children and youth.”

What that means, however, remains somewhat of a mystery.

The resolution comes a week after a number of commissioners criticized the Ottawa County Public Health Department for having an informational table at the Grand Haven Pride Festival and voicing their concerns over event coordinators allowing children to attend the festival’s drag shows.

Commissioner Allison Miedema:

“At a time in our nation’s history where trust in healthcare systems are (sic) under question, I wonder why our department of public health is choosing to participate in Grand Haven’s Pride Festival,” Miedema said. “By being in attendance, the (OCDPH) is promoting sexual promiscuity, which in turn, can contribute to future clients of public health who will be seeking positive STD testing along with mental health services.”

The department of public health says they were not a sponsor of the event, and attended the pride festival to offer STD vaccinations, prophylactics and information about infectious diseases to a high-risk population.
