Smoke from Canadian wildfires descends on Grand Rapids

Wildfire smoke descends on Grand Rapids from Canada Tuesday.

What may look like fog in West Michigan Tuesday is actually wildfire smoke coming from the Canadian wildfires that are raging in Quebec. That is producing air quality levels in Michigan that are very unhealthy according to AirNow.Gov, the federal government’s website that tracks the air quality index.

Things are worse in the eastern UP, which as of this morning, had the worst air quality in the nation to begin the day, while the Greater Grand Rapids Area ranked in the 10 ten worst.

And according to the Air Quality Index, it’s best to stay inside as much as possible until the smoke clears out, as officials are warning those with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teens to avoid physical activities outdoors all together.

For everyone else, officials say, take it easy and avoid strenuous outdoor activities and keep them short. Consider moving physical activities indoors or rescheduling them.

Officials say the smoke should clear out in the next 24 hours.
