With many schools in Grand Rapids out for the summer, Michigan’s “Meet Up and Eat Up” program has begun offering free lunches to youth.

The federally funded program helps feed students who may otherwise go hungry without schools to feed them.

Diane Golzynski is the Deputy Superintendent for Finance and Operations for the Michigan Department of Education.

She said the program is critical for students and adds that more than 50% of students statewide rely on schools to eat during the school year.

They eat breakfast and lunch at school and when school is out then they really struggle with hunger and finding where that next meal is going to come from,” she said.

Golzynski said only school districts with the highest number of free or reduced priced eligible kids are allowed to participate in the program. But, any child under 18 can receive a free meal at any location with no questions asked.
