The Grand Rapids Police Department is introducing two new dogs who have passed their certification and have recently begun their service.
A news release tells us that K9 Bleu is partnered with Officer Doug Stevens. Bleu is a 23-month-old male, he is trained in explosive detection and patrol functions. Bleu is replacing retired K9 Jack, who left service on April 8. Jack was also partnered with Officer Stevens and is now spending his retirement with the Stevens family and his new brother, K9 Bleu.
K9 Rocco is partnered with Officer Austin Diekevers. Rocco is an 18-month-old male trained in narcotics detection and patrol functions. K9 Rocco joined the department in advance of K9 Aero’s retirement. Aero and his human partner, Sergeant Tim Hoornstra, will both retire from GRPD later this month.
Sgt. Justin Kribs from the K9 Unit says, “K9s are an important part of police work,” adding “We appreciate the foundation’s support of these dogs to help keep our community safe.”
Authorities say funds to purchase and train the new K9s came in part through support from the Grand Rapids Police Foundation.
