"As adults, it is our responsibility to ensure that those things that can harm them are not readily accessible," GRPS Superintendent, Dr. Leadriane Roby, said in a message to parents on Friday.

As the school year comes to a close, Grand Rapids Public Schools is reminding parents about the importance of gun safety. In a letter to parents on Friday, Superintendent, Dr. Leadriane Roby, asked parents to lock up their guns.

It's an ask Roby said is "serious but simple," saying in part:

We have seen far too often the devastating consequences that can result from firearms getting into the hands of our young people.

As we go into the summer months, many of our children will have more time at home and more opportunities to search and explore.

As adults, it is our responsibility to ensure that those things that can harm them are not readily accessible.

Roby's message was accompanied by a series of gun safety tips. The full release can be found here.

In May, GRPS implemented a backpack ban, after confiscating its fourth handgun from a student during the academic year.

Free gun locks are available at the Grand Rapids Police Department and Kent County Sherriff’s Office.
