Like many of the city’s 14 other splash pads, City project manager Karie Enriquez said the Garfield Park splash pad is universally accessible.
She said splash pads are a good way for people to participate in water activities without needing to know how to swim and makes it easier for caregivers to keep an eye on children.
“Regardless of the abilities, people can come and utilize these spaces so it ensures there’s access around all of the splash pad components, clear access from the parking lot into the splash pad area, as well as the picnic tables, you know, space available for someone in a wheelchair to come up,” she said.
Enriquez adds the accessibility of the splash pads means everyone can enjoy the space, especially as temperatures get warmer.
All splash pads and pools will officially open next Friday June 9th. The splash pads are free and will open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The city’s three pools at Briggs Park, Martin Luther King Jr Park and Richmond Park will also open daily at noon.
Closing times for the pools will depend on location and day. More info on pools and admission costs can be found at the city’s website.
