Group of 5 graduates map out plan for improving businesses along road downtown

A group of Michigan State University students have partnered with the City of Muskegon, as officials are looking at ways to revitalize Pine Street in the city’s downtown corridor.

Pine Street in Muskegon is seen by locals as an upcoming area of the city. On the north end of the road, the NorthTown 794 building has already become a popular destination spot, housing a restaurant, speakeasy, coffee shop and retail shopping. Surrounding buildings, however, are in desperate need of upgrades.

Back in January, the City of Muskegon Planning Department, Downtown Development Authority, and Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce partnered with 5 students MSU’s Urban and Regional Planning program, as the graduates presented their Pine Street Business Improvement to city commissioners this month.

Part of the plan recommends upgrades along Pine that include lighting each side of the road to create a sense of safety and promote nightlife, while upgrading existing buildings. In addition, the plan also calls for the construction of two mixed-use buildings and a large mall to provide more commercial and residential spaces.

Still the plan is for now, just that—a plan --nothing has been set in motion yet, however, several city officials have expressed interest in moving forward.
