The Legislature adopted the ban roughly a decade ago while Republicans were in charge. This legislation would once again allow payroll deductions for union PAC donations if they’re negotiated as part of a collective bargaining agreement, and union members individually opt in. Democratic Representative Penelope Tsernoglou chairs the House Elections Committee. She says this would treat union political committees the same as employer PACs.
“As long as we continue to allow these for corporate PACs, this simply makes it equal and fair and levels the playing field so that it can also be allowed for union PACs.”
The bills were adopted on party-line votes and now go to the House floor.
