Wyoming gets public safety funding as voters cast ballots Tuesday

In Kent County, voters in Algoma Township rejected a controversial proposal that would have removed the township from the county’s library system while establishing its own.

The ballot measure came after a flyer had been mailed to residents that falsely accused Kent County of hosting drag-queen reading hours to children at its local library branches.

In Wyoming, voters approved a millage increase that will fund “critical public safety needs” and cover the salaries of additional police officers, firefighters, and other departmental positions.

And in a back-and-forth decision Tuesday that came down to the wire, Caledonia Community School officials are breathing a sigh of relief this morning after residents unofficially approved a $61 million supplemental bond proposal by just over 70 votes.

The district had received criticism for asking for more money, after voters said yes to a nearly $90 million dollar bond proposal back in 2020. Officials said inflation and the rising cost of goods required the additional funding.
