Kent County Community Action said it hopes to help around 100 households, estimating about $3,000 - $7,000 per financial assistance.

Kent County Community Action has launched a rental assistance program for individuals who are behind on rent payments. Applicants must live in Kent County but outside the cities of Grand Rapids and Wyoming.

Gustavo Perez is the group’s director. He told WGVU available funding could help around 100 households, estimating about $3,000 - $7,000 per assistance.

“We’re hoping it can give them some stability while they try to figure out their situation and what they’re going through and trying to buy them some time and hopefully keep some people housed. There’s obviously a greater need right now, we’re just trying to make a difference in any way we can.”

In order to participate, the following qualifications must be met:

  • Renters must currently be in arrears on their current rent,
  • Provide photo ID and Social Security cards for all occupants of the residence,
  • Provide proof of all household income for all occupants of the residence,
  • Provide a copy of current lease or rental agreement,
  • Meet income guidelines, and
  • Landlord participation is also required.

Funds were made possible through a federal community development block grant, which will expire in June of 2023.
KCAA says funding and time is limited, so renters are encouraged to apply quickly. Applications can only be accepted by appointment. Appointments can be scheduled by calling (616) 632-7950.
