Pine Rest offering free counseling after MSU tragedy

Team of 20 crisis-management professionals assembled to assist. MSU and Pine Rest have a long-standing relationship, and many of the trained professionals cleared their schedules to have the ability to help

In the wake of the Michigan State University shooting, Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services announced it is offering free counseling to students and staff experiencing trauma.

The local health organization says it has assembled a team of more than 20 professionals trained in crisis counseling, as health officials say, the trauma of Monday’s events could take weeks for some to fully work through.

Chief Medical Officer Bill Sanders:

“Our hearts just go out to the MSU community, and more importantly, we want to be able to stand with them.”

Sanders says, MSU and Pine Rest have a long-standing relationship, and many of the trained professionals cleared their schedules to have the ability to help.

The services are not for just students and staff. Sanders says that anyone affected by the shootings who are dealing with trauma can contact Pine Rest at (616) 559-5895.

Sanders urged those who are having a hard time compartmentalizing the events in East Lansing on Monday to utilize the service, noting the best way to deal with tragedy and trauma is to speak with others about what you are feeling, rather than burying it inside.
