The Grand Rapids Art Museum unveiled a new exhibition. Presence: The Photography Collection of Judy Glickman Lauder opened Saturday. WGVU’s Patrick Center spoke with the world-famous photographer and collector.

“It’s a fashion shot by Richard Avedon and it just ‘pow!’ ‘Sparks!’”

Judy Glickman Lauder is referring to a 1959 black and white photo of actress Audrey Hepburn and humorist Art Buchwald.

“When I was collecting, I started in L.A. The images were available and affordable, incredible 20th century black and white images. And I’m still photographing. I’m still collecting.”

And the collection of nearly 700 photos is housed in Maine at the Portland Museum of Art. Presence: The Photography Collection of Judy Glickman Lauder contains 145 works featuring 70 influential artists. She admits composing it was difficult.

“When I see an image that has what I call ‘a presence,’ that’s why the title, [the image] has an inner presence. It has to pop out and speak to me. That’s what I collect.”

Presence: The Photography Collection of Judy Glickman Lauder is on display at the Grand Rapids Art Museum now through April 29th.
