Whitmer pitches plans ahead of State of the State speech

Governor Gretchen Whitmer made stops today in Lansing and Brighton to build support for her 2023 agenda as she prepares to deliver her fifth State of the State address tomorrow.

The Democratic governor says she expects fights with Republicans on some issues, including abortion and LGBTQ rights. This is the first time in nearly 40 years that Democrats are in charge of the Legislature with a Democratic governor.

Ac1 “But it will still be very important that we try to find as much bipartisan common ground as we can. The Democrats control both the House and Senate, but only by two votes in each chamber.”

Those slim majorities could complicate deal-making with Republicans looking to force Democrats into making concessions on tough deals and with an eye toward picking up seats in special elections to fill vacancies.
