The Michigan House School Safety Task Force has made many recommendations in its final report. But its members couldn’t reach consensus on guns

The report focuses on mental health support and assessing security risks.

The task force successfully added several items to the budget to help with both.

But gun policy ideas like encouraging safe storage or getting rid of “gun free zones” fell under the “non-consensus recommendations” category.

Republican co-chair Luke Meerman says he understands a lot of people had expectations for the group.

“We had those discussions and we had hours of discussion, multiple hours of discussion on that subject. And we had members on the committee advocating to others from different points of that.”

The task force formed in response to last year’s fatal shooting at Oxford High School.
