The Michigan State Capitol Commission voted in a new chair ahead of significant expected turnover next year

The group mainly oversees restoration and preservation projects at the Capitol.

With the state Legislature changing to Democratic control next year, several spots on the commission will likely change as well.

But newly elected chair Bill Kandler says he hopes the commission will remain non-partisan, as it did when it voted to ban open carry of firearms from the capitol in 2021.

“We worked hard to accomplish something without it becoming a partisan battle. I mean I ended up voting against something I supported just to keep us from having a partisan split so we had a little more time to work through to get something we could all vote for and not be a Democrat versus Republican issue.”

The commission is made up of the secretary of the Senate, House clerk, and appointees.
