Sen. Bumstead wins re-election over Rep. Terry Sabo in closely watched race

Hilary Farrell

Both candidates have been longtime Lakeshore lawmakers

In one of the more closely watched races in Muskegon County, Republican and State Senator Jon Bumstead defeated Democrat, Challenger, and Michigan House of Representatives Terry Sabo Tuesday night.

The contest featured two longtime lawmakers from the Lakeshore, both who have been instrumental in the City of Muskegon’s transformation over the past decade.

Bumstead has served in the State Senate since 2018, having previously served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2010-2016. While Sabo, is finishing his third and final term in the Michigan House of Representatives, hoping to parlay that experience into the State Senate Tuesday night.

An extremely close race, the Associated Press did not call the contest until after 9AM Wednesday morning, with Bumstead receiving 53 percent of the vote over Sabo’s 47.

WGVU spoke with Sen Bumstead just a few days before the election.

“At this stage of my life, I still enjoy doing the work,” Bumstead says.

The newly drawn 32nd District encompasses most of Muskegon County and the Lake Michigan shoreline counties of Oceana, Mason, Manistee and Benzie.
