Zeeland Republican wins 7th term in US House of Representatives

United States Representative Bill Huizenga bested 3 other candidates including Democrat and U.S. Marine Corps veteran Joseph Alfonso Tuesday night, as the longtime lawmaker wins another term in Washington with the victory.

Previously, the Zeeland-based Republican had served in Michigan’s 2nd Congressional District since 2011, however, redistricting placed Rep. Huizenga in the newly drawn 4th; which at the time also included longtime United States Representative and Republican Fred Upton. Before the two could square off in the Republican primary in August however, Upton dropped out of the race, while announcing his retirement, paving the way for Huizenga’s victory Tuesday evening.

Speaking with Rep. Huizenga, last week, he said, he is anxious to get to know and serve his new constituents in the 4th District.

“I am a guy that is very involved in the community, very involved in listening to all voices, even the ones that may disagree with me, or I disagree with them; because I think that is an opportunity to learn.” Huizenga said. “And that is my job, to learn something new every day.”

The 4th District makes up the southern half of Ottawa County, including the cities of Holland, Zeeland, Kalamazoo, and Battle Creek.
