A bill to update the state’s “Open Meetings Act” is set for a committee hearing this week

Many of the changes in the bill deal with updating definitions and requirements. Some of them account for the digital age.

For example, a previous definition outlining what constitutes a “closed session” of a meeting simply described it as being "closed to the public."

The updated version would add in language to include email, texting, and other forms of e-communication that could occur during an open session.

The bill would also remove COVID-specific references that were part of temporary changes that expired in the spring of 20-21.

Another part of the legislation would up the cost of certain fines for violating the act.
