The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act Stronger Connections grant program dollars are geared toward establishing safe and supportive schools. Specifically, reinforcing student’s academic needs with additional funding for beneficial social, emotional, physical, and mental health programs.
Michigan is receiving nearly $27.9 million
With the funding issued directly to states, Dr. James Lane, Assistant Secretary of Education explained how it will be distributed to districts.
“The states and their departments of education will be required to hold a competition for districts, and holding that competition, the eligible districts for the competition will be high-need L.E.A.’s which are school districts in the state.”
Local school districts are encouraged to apply focusing on three areas: “create positive, inclusive, and supportive school environments…engaging students, families, educators, staff, and community organizations in the selection and implementation of strategies and interventions to create safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments. Lastly, designing and implementing policies and practices that are responsive to underserved students, protect student rights, and demonstrate respect for student dignity and potential.”
