Republican candidate for governor Tudor Dixon called on the state schools superintendent to quit Tuesday over a training program that helps teachers working with LGBTQ students

Dixon and some supporters gathered outside the state education department building to call for Superintendent Michael Rice to resign. Their primary gripe is his defense of training videos that suggested teachers should sometimes keep a student’s gender identity private from parents. That would be in instances where the student might face abuse, neglect or homelessness.

Dixon said that’s not a teacher’s job.

“We will ban school personnel from talking to young kids about sex and gender behind their parents’ backs.”

A spokesman said Rice is not going to quit.
