The Home Heating credit deadline is September 30th. It’s an annual credit available to Michigan residents. And the Heart of West Michigan United Way wants Kent County residents who qualify to make sure they don’t miss out.
Here’s Brenda Brame, Program Manager for the Kent County Tax Credit Coalition at the Heart of West Michigan United Way.
“This year, 120 million dollars of funding is available for homeowners and renters who qualify to receive the assistance, up from 70 M last year.”
In 2021, the average household who qualified for the credit received $216, and this year there are ways to possibly get more.
“For those who receive food assistance benefits and received the credit may be eligible for an increase in their food assistance benefits and people don’t realize that.”
To qualify for the credit, applicants must be a homeowner or a renter with a contracted lease and meet certain income requirements.
Brame says the best way to qualify for the Home Heating Credit among other tax credits is to make an appointment at a free tax preparation site. You can do that by calling 2-1-1. But she adds you should not wait until the end of the month deadline to do so.
