The Grand Rapids Police Department Thursday evening released body-camera-worn footage of a man getting shot multiple times after pointing a gun at police during a foot pursuit.
The man remains in serious condition at a hospital but is expected to survive.
According to Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom, two officers responded to reports of an adult male breaking into cars in the 3000 block of Forrester Street SE.
After locating the suspect, police say the man took off running. According to a press release, as police gave chase, the man turned and pointed a handgun in the direction of the two officers. Both officers then shot the suspect several times.
While Michigan State Police are conducting an investigation, Chief Winstrom says he has watched the body-worn-camera footage of the incident, however, he would not comment on whether the officers acted appropriately.
“It’s not my investigation,” Winstrom said. “And I don’t know what I don’t know. I have three videos right now, the two body-cam videos, and video taken from the dashboard. From my perspective, the videos indicate that, to me, there was a firearm pointed directly at two of my police officers.”
The GRPD confirmed Thursday that detectives did recover a gun at the scene.
Per GRPD policy, Chief Windstrom says both officers have been placed on administrative leave while State Police investigate.
