‘Hundreds of thousands’ stolen from area business in fraudulent checks

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is warning businesses owners to be on the lookout for mail theft, after a number of checks have been stolen in recent weeks.

According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s office, a string of thefts have targeted commercial mailboxes in a number of areas in the county including Jamestown, Georgetown and Tallmadge Townships.

Authorities say, thieves have stolen business checks from both outgoing and incoming mail on several occasions this summer, changing the name on the check as well as the original amount written.

So far, officials say, thieves have cashed the checks across the state, and as far as Arizona and Colorado, while making off with hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen money.

Now the Sheriff’s Office is asking for help in catching those responsible; specifically, to watch out for unfamiliar vehicles near commercial mailboxes.

Meanwhile, authorities are urging business owners to use a locked mailbox, postal service drop box, or to deliver outgoing mail directly to the Post Office.
