Voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, August 2 to cast their ballots in Michigan’s 2022 Primary election

The two biggest races that will be followed the closest are the Republican Primary in Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District and the Gubernatorial Republican Primary.

In the 3rd, challenger John Gibbs will try to beat out incumbent and US Rep. Peter Meijer to be the Republican candidate in November. Congressman Meijer has been heavily criticized by far-right conservatives for voting to impeach former President Donald Trump, as well as voting in favor of gun reform legislation. Gibbs has been endorsed by Trump as well. Whomever wins will take on Democrat Hilary Scholten in the General Election in November. Scholten is running un-opposed.

Meanwhile, five Republican candidates for Governor will be on the ballot as voters will consider Tudor Dixon, Ryan Kelley, Kevin Rinke, Garret Soldano, and Ralph Rebandt. According to polling data from Real Clear Politics, Tudor Dixon has a slight lead over the remaining four as of Friday, July 29th, but is not the clear frontrunner either despite an endorsement from former President Donald Trump. Whomever wins will face Governor Gretchen Whitmer in the November general election.

Polls are open Tuesday, August 2, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. WGVU will have a complete list of winners and election results on Wednesday morning on air and online at wgvunews.org.
