Hackley Public Library amplifies voices with new, community zine collection

The library’s new, interactive Muskegon County Community Zine Collection is taking submissions, with a goal of amplifying voices – especially those that are often marginalized.

Whether it’s through text, artwork, comics or a little mix of everything, Hackley Public Library (HPL) in Muskegon is encouraging community members to find and share their voice.

The library’s new, interactive Muskegon County Community Zine Collection is taking submissions, with a goal of amplifying voices – especially those that are often marginalized.

A zine in this case is a handmade booklet featuring an array of storytelling methods like writing and imagery.

“Your stories, your thoughts, your artwork, your poetry, whatever creativity is bursting to get out, we want to put it in our collection,” Hackley Public Library said in a statement.

HPL said the project is thanks to a grant through the American Rescue Plan for Libraries. The group used the funds to purchase a scanner, which will be used to digitize each zine submitted.

The special collection will consist of submissions from adults living in Muskegon County and will be available for Patrons to take home and read.

Community members can submit their work at any Muskegon County Library or online at hackleylibrary.org.
