Faces life in prison if convicted of attempted-murder

Authorities said Friday that A 17-year-old will face attempted murder charges as an adult for allegedly shooting at a Grand Rapids Police Officer’s cruiser.

The Kent County Prosecutor’s office said early Friday that Arthur Darell-Jamal Williams is charged with attempted murder, felony firearm and discharge of a firearm from a vehicle.

According to the GRPD, a Grand Rapids Police Officer was out on patrol at roughly 3:00 in the morning on June 24th, and driving down Prospect Avenue when he noticed a vehicle approaching his cruiser with its headlights off.

Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom explains, what happened next…

“As the vehicles approached each other, the vehicle without his headlights on stopped, a passenger leaned out of the window and begin firing shots at the police officer,” Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said at a press conference in June.

Officials say, a lengthy pursuit followed, until three suspects jumped from the Black Cadillac and ran.

Two suspects remain at large, but K9 units were able to track down Williams and take him into custody.

Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker said Friday that he is charging Williams as an adult, “due to the nature of the charges,”

He faces spending the rest of his life in prison if convicted.
