Whitmer asks insurers to cover abortions while legal cases play out

State of Michigan

Governor Gretchen Whitmer is asking insurance companies in Michigan to provide health coverage for abortion services. That’s as legal fights over abortion rights in the state continue to play out.

Abortion is still legal in Michigan under a state Court of Claims order. That put on hold a 1931 abortion ban while the case is litigated. Whitmer’s asked the Michigan Supreme Court to declare abortion rights are protected under the Michigan Constitution.

“I will continue taking action until we secure reproductive freedom in Michigan.”

The governor’s request also looks ahead to possibility that court battles to protect abortion rights in Michigan will fail. In that event, she wants insurance companies to cover abortion procedures performed in other states and to help with travel expenses. Her office did not share which insurance companies were sent the letter.
