Whitmer signs school mental health resource bill

Office of the Governor

The bill requires emergency plans to help ensure the safety of staff and students.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a bill today (FRI) to improve school safety and mental health as attention is riveted on ways to reduce the number of school shootings. Four students were killed and seven people injured in a shooting last year at Oxford High School.
The bill requires emergency plans to help ensure the safety of staff and students. Also, incident mapping to determine where more assistance to improve school safety might be needed, as well as funds to hire and retain school mental health professionals. And the new law earmarks money specifically to help Oxford Community Schools recover.
