5 GOP candidates booted from ballot; court challenges coming

The candidate field went from 10 people to five due to what appears to be widespread fraud by paid circulators gathering petition signatures.

Democrats said the signature requirement is not a moving target and the candidates simply failed to meet it. Republicans voted to give the campaigns a pass. At least one candidate says the next step will be a court challenge.

The field of Republicans running for governor was cut in half Thursday under decisions made by a bipartisan state elections board.

The candidate field went from 10 people to five due to what appears to be widespread fraud by paid circulators gathering petition signatures. The bumped candidates say they were taken advantage of by dishonest signature gatherers hired by their campaigns.

Mary Ellen Gurewitz is a Democrat on the board, who says she gets that the candidates feel like victims:

“Which is hard to stomach, quite frankly. It’s their obligation to check these signatures.”
