Republicans and Democrats on a legislative committee are deadlocked on absentee ballot rules. The result is those rules will not be ready for the upcoming 2022 elections.
The differences center on matching signatures in clerks’ files with signatures on mailed-in ballots and the ability to request a ballot online using electronic signatures.
Republicans say Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s plans would open the door to fraud and error, and that she won’t negotiate.
Democrats, including Representative Julie Brixie, say it’s Republicans who are NOT bargaining in good faith.
“This appears to be something that’s going to be a bait-and-switch.”
Brixie says the GOP goal is to make it harder for people to vote.
