Whitmer: GOP tax cut plan “not sustainable”

Whitmer: GOP tax cut plan “not sustainable”

Governor Gretchen Whitmer said today that she is opposed to a two-and-a-half billion dollar tax cut plan adopted this week by the state Senate.

The governor’s comments before the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce strongly signal a veto if the Senate tax cut plan hits her desk.

She said the GOP plan is not sustainable and would be a modest rollback compared to targeted tax breaks for people who most need the help.

“… that would not have a meaningful improvement in the quality of life of people we know are struggling in this moment.”

The governor specifically named a boost in the state Earned Income Tax Credit and repealing the tax on some pension income as her preferred tax cut priorities.
