With the goal of serving the community with “dignity and respect”, “Thrift on Div” formally opened its doors today. It’s a new thrift and artisan market that aligns with the mission of Degage’ Ministries.
“Thrift on Div”, we’re part of the new ‘So-Div” district here on south Division.”
And “Thrift On Div” formally opened its doors today. A grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony was held earlier in the day with Grand Rapids Mayor Roslynn Bliss among the officials on hand. Thelma Ensink is the Executive Director for Degage’ Ministries.
“It’s really a dream come true for us. To be able to create a beautiful space for the whole community, including the people we serve who experience homelessness and poverty to shop together in a beautiful store. It offers things at low cost, the people we serve can use vouchers there as well. But it also features local artisans.” Ensink says in addition to new and gently used women and men’s fashions, “Thrift on Div” will offer things you won’t find anywhere else… with the idea of “re-purposing” being at the center.
“You know a lot of the décor in there are repurposed items. You’ll see an old cash register, a type writer and radio. The whole idea is re-purpose, repurpose of things, but also re purpose in our lives as the people we serve are moving in a new direction in their lives.”
The store, which is located at 140 Division Ave South, also provides employment to participants of Dégagé’s Workforce Development Program.
The store will be open Tuesday - Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., as well as Thursday evenings 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., with the anticipation of additional hours in the spring.
Proceeds from Thrift on Div will benefit programs at Dégagé Ministries. If you would like to donate new or gently used items, please visit degageministries.org
