Michigan’s Secretary of State is concerned about having enough time to prepare for this fall's primary elections. That's because a new political map is under scrutiny in court.
The Secretary of State filed a brief with the state Supreme Court. It asks the court to set a quick timeline for drawing a new map if the state's redistricting commission loses the case.
Tracy Wimmer is a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of State.
“There’s no position on the maps themselves. It has to do with recognizing the deadlines involved with the implementation of the maps and the administration of elections, which the Secretary of State and the Bureau of Elections are tasked with doing.”
Wimmer says some administrative work to prepare for elections after receiving the new maps typically takes about six months. The candidate filing deadline for partisan offices is much sooner: April 19th.
