With more winter weather now upon us, the City of Grand Rapids is gearing up to offer outdoor winter activities this week. Get ready for snowshoeing, cross country skiing and more.

This week’s snowfall has the City’s Parks and Recreation department prepping for fun winter activities at parks and public spaces across Grand Rapids. Here’s Director of Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation, David Marquardt.

“We’ve got sledding that the department will start offering this Saturday, January 8th, from one to 4 pm. And it will be at t two locations, Mulick park on the southside of the city and Plaster Creek right behind Buchanan Elementary. The department will offer sleds, they’ll be available, you don’t need to do anything to check them out- just show up at the hill.”

Additional pop-up sledding events at other hills across the park system will be announced as weather allows. Those pop-up events will be announced on the Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Facebook and Instagram pages.   The sled rental program is provided through the City’s Thrive Outside initiative, which aims to create equitable, meaningful outdoor experiences for young people and families in Grand Rapids.

“It’s our attempt to make sure that everyone has access to the fun outdoors and activities that exist here in Grand Rapids.”

Marquardt adds, in addition to sled rentals, the Parks and Recreation Department is also once again offering winter activities at Indian Trails Golf Course. The trail system will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for fat tire biking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing, weather permitting.
