Kids ages 5-11 now eligible for shot in state's largest city.

Today (Monday)…Detroit officials begin offering COVID-19 vaccine to young children.

City officials began taking appointments last week…after both the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approved the Pfizer vaccine for children between the age of five and 11.

The doses are about one-third the strength of those given to adults.

The city has vaccination clinics set at the Detroit Health Department and Northwest Activities Center.

Detroit public…private and charter schools plan future vaccination efforts…and some pharmacies and health systems will offer them as well.

Officials say they hope the moves increase residents' willingness to accept the vaccine.

Fewer than half of all Detroiters are inoculated against COVID.

Now almost 70-thousand additional children in the city are eligible for vaccinations.
