Degage Ministries and the Grand Rapids Ballet have partnered on an interactive ArtPrize performance. The hope is to raise awareness of homelessness.

“This art form just really shows the beautiful, powerful and physical way what connects us as humans and what some are experiencing, things we cannot even imagine.”

Thelma Ensink is the Executive Director with Degage Ministries. She says she’s excited about the partnership with the Grand Rapids Ballet on an ArtPrize exhibit that puts the spotlight on homelessness in Grand Rapids. Dancers will perform to vocals and music provided by Degage patrons, in three live performances which provide a glimpse into being homeless. The piece is entitled, “Created by Circumstance.”

“Grand Rapids Ballet choreographed a piece about what causes homelessness. There are so many stereotypes about what causes homelessness. But, really all of us are just one or two events away from this. This piece really shows how life can throw us trauma, medical conditions and then we can find ourselves in this position.”

Ensink says this work provides access to the arts, which those experiencing homelessness often don’t have along with telling an important story, a story she says continues to evolve.

“We just continue to see an increase in homelessness and we continue to see more and more deep needs. Our homeless population is aging. So yes, the needs are increasing, but also they’re just deeper needs.”

Performances of “Created by Circumstance” will be held Sept 22 at Heartside Park, Sept 24 at the Monroe Social Zone and at Rosa Parks Circle on September 26th.

With the need being great Degage’ Officials says they would love for the community to partner with them. You can find a list of specific needs at their website at Degage.org.
