With a year of online learning under their belts, technology is becoming a permanent fixture of the education experience. The Better Business Bureau Serving Western Michigan reminds consumers to shop smart online ahead of the new school year.

Market research firm, Deloitte, indicates that nearly half of consumers want to shop for their technology purchases online. However, shortages of essential supplies like computer chips may limit the options available to shoppers, opening the door for scammers to offer phony deals and products. Katie Grevious is the Communications Specialist with the Better Business Bureau Serving Western Michigan.

“Scammers know, that not only are we looking for tech in the upcoming school year, more than we have in the past. And that we are also going to be looking for it online. That is where a lot more consumers are shopping now. And it’s easier to scam you through an online website, especially when it looks legitimate and they have the product you’ve been trying to get and you’re running out of time.”

So, the BBB is offering these tips for buying your online tech materials this fall. Katie says for one, you should start your shopping early.

“Products may not be as readily available as you want, so, If you wait until that last minute, like many of us do when it comes to back to school shopping, you’re going to be in a lot of trouble and you’re going to have a hard time finding things online. And you may start clicking on the first thing you find, so definitely start early. And then, make sure where you’re buying from is legitimate. Do a little bit of research, read their ‘about page’, be comfortable with that seller before you make that purchase.”

Katie adds, using a credit card can also help in the event you were scammed as it’s easier to recoup a potential loss.
