Three proposals and county commissioner primary at stake

Voters in Muskegon County will head to the polls Tuesday as proposals will be considered in three separate townships.

To begin in Egleston Township, voters will decide whether or not they want cannabis dispensaries to move in, as an ordinance is being considered that will allow two retail establishments and two facilities to grow the marijuana as well. The decision is now up to residents, after Egleston Township Board of Trustee’s ls rejected the idea earlier—however Township Supervisor John Holter told WGVU, that despite not being on board with the idea, if voters approve the ordinance, the Board would not fight it.

In Fruitport Township, voters will consider to mileages, one to fund the Police Department, the other for Public Safety. Both are for five years, and would raise nearly $1.4 million that would cover operating costs for that period. Fruitport officials say, this is a renewal only, and the departments’ budgets depend on it.

To Holton Township now, where the Fire Department is also seeking a renewal of an existing millage that will cover the operating costs for the next ten years. If the Holton Fire Department sounds familiar, two and a half weeks ago, Holton Fire Chief Bryan Hawk died in a tragic motorcycle accident on July 22nd.

Meanwhile five candidates are running for two Muskegon City Commission seats, as voters will narrow that list to four in Tuesday’s primary.
