GVSU launches vaccine sweepstakes

On the heels of a $5 million vaccination sweepstakes in Michigan, Grand Valley State University is launching its own contest for students.

$100 is what students could win, as school officials declared last week that July is “Lakers Vax-Up Month.”

The Vaccination Incentive based Program is all in an effort to not only encourage students to get the shot, but also help the University track which students already have.

“We don’t have good data on the vaccination status of our students," said Greg Sanial, Director of Grand Valley's Virus Action team. "We hope that by providing some incentive for them to report their vaccination status, we can get better info on the overall vaccination rate amongst our student body.”

This move comes in the midst of a statewide push for a 70 percent vaccination rate, as Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer recently announced a five-million dollar statewide sweepstakes plan.

In order to be eligible for the lottery-style prize, GVSU students have to have received at least the first vaccine dose and complete an online assessment.

Drawings for one thousand winners will begin in the first week of August.
