Metro Health-University of Michigan Health is changing its name, but not its commitment to West Michigan. Officials say the name change is simply meant to reflect Metro Health’s role as part of the number one ranked health system in the state.
“We are transitioning to becoming the University of Michigan Health West.”
Dr. Peter Hahn is the CEO at Metro Health University of Michigan Health. He says the name change is building on a tremendous legacy.
“Metro has a proud 80-year history. We were founded by ten osteopathic physicians who mortgaged their homes to start the first hospital in downtown Grand Rapids. Throughout our history we’ve been progressive and innovative. Lots of big inflection points.”
But Dr. Hahn says the biggest inflection point came five years ago when Metro Health became Metro-Health, University of Michigan Health.
“And there’s been tremendous growth and expansion of capabilities. But we’ve never strayed from that patient centric, high touch culture that really roots back to our osteopathic roots.”
Recent accomplishments include development of a comprehensive stroke center, authorization for an open-heart surgery partnership and top safety ratings. Dr. Hahn says they will continue to build upon their current accomplishments.
“We’re excited to bring that University of Michigan Health level of care to West Michigan, in terms of open heart, cardiovascular care, all of that.”
The name change will be phased in over the next 12 months.
