Senate to meet to adopt K-12 budget

KCAW.org

The state Senate returns to Lansing tomorrow with three budget bills on its agenda. The bills include plans to appropriate four-point-four billion dollars in federal COVID-19 response funds.

School districts and local governments have fiscal years that begin this week, and officials say they need to make use of that federal money to return to normal and adjust to new realities.

At an event in East Lansing, Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she’d like to see all three bills sent to her that are ready to sign.

“I can’t speak to the fact that they’re only in one day this week, but they can get a lot done in one day and so I would love to see them finish this budget on time.”

The Senate would have to approve the bills as adopted last week by the House, otherwise, the process would be prolonged into the summer. Any budget bills sent to Whitmer would still be subject to line-item vetoes.
