The Principle Shopping District in Downtown Holland has put out its call for a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) consultant. Kara De Alvare, Downtown Holland’s marketing coordinator, said the group’s board of directors began exploring DEI initiatives in 2018 and feels it’s time to push further.

“I think it’s a reflection of what’s going on in our nation as well and seeing this pervasive racial injustice that we witness on the national news all the time, and I think it's just a reflection of us saying you know we really want our community to rise above that and to be better and to ensure that everyone feels at home here,” de Alvare said.

The request for proposals is listed on the city of Holland’s website and will be accepted through July 1. De Alvare said her team is interested in local candidates, and hopes to bring someone in who can help both the organization and its business members with bias training, minority business longevity and marketing, among other initiatives.

We want to make sure that all of our local community and all visitors to the area feel invited, welcomed and engaged in downtown Holland,” de Alvare said.
