Spectrum Health Butterworth, Blodgett and Zeeland Community Hospitals have been named to the Fortune/IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals list.

The hospitals were named among the top performing hospitals in the Major Teaching and Small Community Peer Groups.

This is the eighth time that Spectrum Health Butterworth and Blodgett Hospitals have been recognized with this honor since 2010.

“Incredibly proud, honored and just so grateful for our teams that make this happen.”

Dr. Darryl Elmouchi is the President of Spectrum Health West Michigan.  He says the fact they have once again earned a spot on the Fortune/IBM Watson Health top 100 hospitals list is really due to those on the front lines.

“It is our doctors and nurses, people that draw blood, those that clean our hospitals, all of our team members.  Without them none of this would really matter and none of this would have happened.”

This year’s ranking of top hospitals introduces a measure of hospitals’ contributions to community health with a focus on equity which Dr. Elmouchi says Spectrum has been focused on for years.

“A good example of that would be “Healthier Communities” which is our program, primarily  in Kent County and the Grand Rapids area caring for health equity and caring for the under served.  But if anything, COVID has opened the whole world’s eyes to health equity and the inequities that are present. And as such, we’ve even doubled down our efforts on this and we’re glad IBM Watson is focusing on it as well.”

The annual list recognizes excellence in clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, patient experience, and financial health. IBM Watson Health established the list to help identify best practices that may help other healthcare organizations achieve consistent, balanced, and sustainable high performance.

Dr. Elmouchi agrees.

“There’s no one way to do anything, particularly in healthcare and so, I think awards like this, help us look to our peers to learn how to do things better in the future.”

IBM Watson Health has identified the top hospitals from a rigorous evaluation of 2,675 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals in the U.S.
