Arson murder is Grand Rapids' 30th homicide this year; 2 shy of the all-time record

Wikipedia

A 40-year-old man has been charged with open murder and arson in connection with a fatal fire at a western Michigan home. Grand Rapids police say Chad Bruining of Kentwood was expected to be arraigned Wednesday.

The Kent County medical examiner's office determined that the death of 41-year-old Todd Cappendyk was a homicide. Cappendyk's remains were found Sunday inside the house after firefighters were able to extinguish the flames.

It was not immediately clear Wednesday if Bruining had an attorney.

It's another murder in the city, the 3oth of the year. The most ever recorded in a single year is 32, set back in 1993. With the city averaging roughly 3 homicides a month in 2020, Grand Rapids may pass that amount before November ends.
