A southwestern Michigan city is getting a $5.6 million federal grant to remove lead water lines.

U.S. Rep. Fred Upton said Benton Harbor will use the money to replace as many residential lead service lines as possible and study the best use of corrosion control treatment in the city’s water system.

“In these unprecedented times with so much uncertainty, families should be able to be certain about this: their drinking water is safe for their children, friends and loved ones,” said Upton, a Republican who represents Benton Harbor in Congress.

A lack of proper corrosion treatment caused lead to contaminate water lines in Flint. Lead and steel lines are being replaced there as part of a lawsuit settlement.
