With the news that President Donald Trump had tested positive for the coronavirus looming over the day, former Vice President Joe Biden flew to Grand Rapids Friday afternoon for a quick campaign stop. Biden’s visit came after pledging earlier this month, that he and running mate Kamala Harris would be a constant presence in Michigan, a key battleground state in the upcoming presidential election.

During his speech, and wearing a mask the entire time, Biden focused primarily on the nation’s economic woes and his plan to restore the economy after the pandemic caused massive unemployment nationwide.

Speaking at UFCW Local 95, Biden said union workers are the backbone of the working middle class, something his hometown and Grand Rapids both have in common.

“I do understand this a scary time, an uncertain time,” Biden said. “I see it, and I see you; because I see the world through where I grew up in Scranton, Pennsylvania; (a city) a lot like Grand Rapids. It’s filled with an awful lot of good people, busting their neck everyday to do the right thing for their families.”

The visit came less than 24 hours after President Donald Trump announced he had tested positive for COVID-19. According to the Biden campaign, the former Vice President tested negative for the virus Friday morning before making the trip to Michigan.

Biden did send his condolences to President Trump during the stop, and wished him a speedy recovery.
